Urispas (Flavoxate)

General information

Urispas belongs to the group of M-cholinoreceptors blockers. This medication contains an active ingredient called flavoxate hydrochloride which is regarded as a synthetic urinary tract spasmolytic. Urispas is known for its muscle relaxant properties and works via affecting the smooth muscle. It is aimed to treat urinary bladder spasms and alleviate symptoms of interstitial cystitis, dysuria, urgency, nocturia, suprapubic pain, frequency and incontinence as may occur in cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and urethrocystitis.

Directions

Apply this medication exactly as it is prescribed. It should be administered orally and the general standard dose for adults and children over 12 years old is 100-200 mg taken three times daily. When the symptoms are alleviated, the dosage can be reduced.

Precautions

Notify your doctor of any other medications or food supplements that you might be taking besides this one. This medication is administered cautiously in case the patient’s medical history includes stomach or intestinal blockage such as ileus, stomach or intestine bleeding, acid-reflux disease, chronic constipation, ulcerative colitis, tachycardia, bradycardia, cardiac insufficiency, glaucoma, renal or hepatic disorders, myasthenia gravis, enlarged prostate gland, hyperthyroidism. This medication may impair your alertness, reactions and cause blurred vision, so be careful while driving or with doing anything that requires you to be alert and attentive. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you are allowed to take concurrently with this product.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients having pyloric or duodenal obstruction, obstructive intestinal lesions or ileus, achalasia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstructive uropathy.

Possible side effect

Most common side effects associated with Urispas include: blurred vision; constipation; decreased sweating; sleeping disorders; vertigo; drowsiness; dry mouth; migraines; loss of taste; nausea; agitation; allergic reactions such as rash; urticaria; skin itching; difficulty breathing; chest pain; mouth, face, lips, or tongue swelling; dysuria; palpitations; tachycardia; fatigue; emesis; mental confusion; leucopenia.

Drug interactions

In case you are not confident whether this medicinal product is compatible with other medicines or supplements, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. Inform your doctor if you are already taking anticholinergic drugs (oxytrol, ditropan, atropine, belladonna alkaloids, scopolamine, benztropine, trihexyphenidyl), antispasmodic drugs (clidinium, dicyclomine), bisphosphonate drugs (alendronate, etidronate, risedronate), medicines containing potassium, antihistamines (diphenhydramine), anti-seizure drugs (carbamazepine), medicines applied to treat sleep or anxiety (e.g., alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, narcotic pain killers (codeine), psychiatric medicines (chlorpromazine, risperidone, amitriptyline, trazodone), antimuscarinic drugs used to treat urinary incontinence such as tolterodine (Detrol, Detrusitol, Vesicare).

Missed dose

In case you have missed to take a dose of this product, take it as soon as possible. If it is near the time to take a next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosage schedule. Avoid compensating a missed dose by taking an extra one.

Overdose

If you suspect you have used too much of this medication, seek emergency medical attention right away. You must do this even if symptoms of discomfort or poisoning haven’t been indicated at once. You may need urgent medical attention. Signs of overdose may include: slow/shallow breathing, hallucinations, seizures, a feeling that you may pass out.

Storage

This medication is stored at room temperature between 15-25 C (57-99 F) away from sources of sunlight, heat, moisture. Avoid storing it in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets. Do not use any remnants of the medication after the expiry date.
