Geodon (Geodon)

General information

Geodon is an antipsychotic medication. It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Geodon is used to treat schizophrenia and the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old. It can improve symptoms of schizophrenia such as: hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.

Directions

Take Geodon exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken two times a day with food. Only your doctor can determine the correct dose for you. The initial daily dose for adults is 40 mg twice daily with food. The dose may then be increased to 60 mg or 80 mg twice daily.

Precautions

Geodon is not for use in psychotic conditions related to dementia. Geodon may cause heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Geodon.

Contraindications

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Do not use Geodon if you have acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, diabetes, hypersensitivity to the product, if you take antibiotics, anti-malaria medications, medicines to treat psychiatric disorders, narcotic medication (methadone).

Possible side effect

The most common side effects are diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, weakness, headache, cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, nausea, upset stomach. Seek medical attention right away if any of these side effects: allergic reactions, decreased sexual ability, mood or mental changes, vision changes, prolonged or painful erection, fever. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.

Drug interactions

Do not take Geodon in combination with Quinidex (quinidine), Orap (pimozide), Betapace (sotalol), Mellaril (thioridazine), Avelox (moxifloxacin) or Zagam (sparfloxacin). Erythromycin, fluoxetine, itraconazole can cause increases in ziprasidone levels or cardiac effects. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are drowsiness, dizziness, fainting, fast heartbeat, anxiety.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
